Gynecologic (GYN) cancers affect the reproductive organs, including the vagina, vulva, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. Dr. Guilherme Cantuaria, a GYN oncologist at Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, explains how genetics, family history and lifestyle factors such as obesity play a role in increasing a woman’s risk.
In this video, Dr. Cantuaria outlines current screening guidelines for cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers, including Pap smears, HPV testing, ultrasounds and CA-125. He also discusses the importance of genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations and the preventive options available for women with high hereditary risk, such as prophylactic surgery.
Northside Hospital Cancer Institute’s High Risk Clinics provide specialized care for women at an increased risk of GYN cancers. Through the support of nurse navigators, physicians and genetic counselors, patients receive comprehensive monitoring, regular screenings and coordinated preventive care.
If you or someone you know has a family history of GYN cancer or a BRCA gene mutation, contact the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute High Risk Program for more information or to schedule an appointment.
