More than a decade after he entered the world at just 25 weeks, former NICU patient Emerson Tritt has returned to Northside Hospital Atlanta in a meaningful way.
In preparation for his Bar Mitzvah, Emerson chose to honor the NICU that cared for him by launching a donation drive to collect items similar to the ones that helped him develop during his time as a patient. His mother, Tova Tritt, contacted Northside earlier this year to explore ways he could give back. Together, they identified items that support the developmental needs of current NICU patients.
Emerson invited his family and friends to participate, asking for donations of developmental toys and muslin blankets — just a few of the items used daily to support premature infants. He collected over 300 items, with more items still being donated.

Emerson said it was vital for him to give back to the very place that was crucial to his survival and to show the staff that he truly appreciates their hard work and dedication.
Emerson’s mom says that she hopes these donations will help as many babies as possible.
“I know what it is like to come in here every single day. I hope that they all feel loved and supported the way that my family was,” she said.
This donation from Emerson and his supporters will directly benefit families and babies currently in the NICU, offering comfort and support during critical early days.
“It has been incredible to see Emerson’s growth and development over the years, said Beth Salzman, neonatal physical therapist at Northside Hospital. “We worked with him from 25 weeks to four months old,” she continued.
Northside Hospital Atlanta staff expressed gratitude for Emerson’s generosity and for the full-circle moment his project represents. His contribution, they said, reflects the profound impact NICU care can have long after a patient leaves the hospital.
